Why Thy Name?

You may think my blog name -- Jalan Hj. Mat Tembikai -- is fictional. And you may have even thought to yourself..."Apalah...banyak-banyak nama to choose from, she chose this. She musta have some weird fixation to watermelons...or some Pak Haji's for that matter!".

Well, neither of both I must say. Rather, the blog name is an honest-to-goodness reference to Jeff's old primary school. I kid you not. He was privileged enough to attend one of the most quirky-named school in the world ever...the Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Haji Mat Tembikai, in Kedah.

Nestled amongst paddy fields and shaded by towering coconut trees, Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Haji Mat Tembikai was named after it's Headmaster, Tuan Hj. Mat Tembikai himself. (did i just hear you gasp?) Again, I kid you not.

But somehow along the way, the school got a name-change -- from its original fruity connotations to something pretty boring...Sek. Ren. Sg. Daun Tengah (ok, still funkier than Sek. Ren. Jln. Selangor..ehem). But alas, what a waste of creative labeling (but add one possibly-pissed Pak Haji too).

As such, I decided what best to keep the quirky legacy on by renaming my blog to what it is today. To Tuan Hj. Mat Tembikai, your name has inspired many "What-I-don't-Believe-That's-Your-School-Name!" retorts between hubby, friends and I. Nevertheless, you must be a fine, fine man dedicated to his fruit, err, school and I salute you.

Hehe.. one of my primary school was "Batu Lanchang" (in Penang). I doubt it's based on somebody's name (nothing beats Encik Mat Tembikai) but add some slang in "lanchang" and it was nirvana... there's nothing like swearing around loudly and getting away with it...

Lucky you.

My sekolah rendah was very the boring. SJS. What can a girl with a limited swearing vocabulary come up with? The most was Sekolah Jin & Setan. That, or Sekolah Jual Spender.

"Lanchang!!"
